Children’s pillow fillings compared: fibre, latex, silk, down and feather
A children’s pillow filling tells you what is inside the pillow. It does not, on its own, tell you the material of the cover, whether the height is adjustable or how to wash it. To compare fibre, latex, silk, down and feather pillows, look at three things together: the filling, the construction and the care instructions.
This guide compares five specific LilPillo models, so you can see what those differences mean before choosing your child’s own little pillow.
Filling, shell and pillowcase: what is the difference?
- Filling is the material inside the pillow, such as down-alternative fibre, silk, down or feather. A pillow can contain more than one material.
- Shell is the fabric that encloses the filling. A cotton shell does not mean the filling is cotton.
- Pillowcase is the separate, removable cover. Changing it does not change the materials inside the pillow.
For example, a silk pillowcase can cover a fibre-filled pillow. LilPillo’s All Silk Mini is a different construction: it has mulberry silk filling, a mulberry silk shell and a removable mulberry silk pillowcase.
Five LilPillo pillow fillings compared
The table uses one model from each family. Check the product page for the exact size you choose; a family name does not establish the composition of every size.
| Model | Filling and shell | Key difference to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Soft Mini | Down-alternative fibre filling in a cotton shell. | Contains no feather, down or latex. Compare its size separately from its filling. |
| AdaptGo Full | A down-alternative outer pillow with a cotton shell, plus one natural-latex insert and two down-alternative microfibre inserts. | Three removable inserts allow different height and feel settings. It contains natural latex, but no feather or down. |
| All Silk Mini | Mulberry silk filling and shell, with a removable mulberry silk pillowcase. | Silk is used inside the pillow as well as in its covers. Contains no feather, down or latex. |
| Goose Down Mini | Ukrainian goose down and small feathers in a cotton shell. | Contains both down and feathers. The name “Goose Down” should not be read as “100% down”. Contains no latex. |
| Supreme 3-Chamber Full | Down-rich outer chambers and a small duck-feather centre, enclosed in a cotton shell. | Materials sit in three separate chambers. This is a different construction from AdaptGo’s removable inserts. Contains duck down and feather, but no latex. |
How to use the comparison
Choosing a fibre-filled pillow
Soft Mini is the fibre-filled model in this comparison. “Down-alternative” describes its filling; it does not mean that down is included. AdaptGo also uses down-alternative material, but combines it with a natural-latex insert. Those two products therefore have different material lists and different constructions, despite sharing the term “down-alternative”.
Choosing silk inside the pillow
If you specifically want silk filling, check the filling line as well as the pillowcase description. All Silk Mini uses mulberry silk in both its filling and shell. Buying a silk pillowcase for another pillow changes the removable cover, not the filling underneath it.
Comparing down and feather models
Read the whole composition rather than choosing by “goose” or “duck” alone. Goose Down Mini contains down and small feathers. Supreme Full separates its down-rich outer filling from its duck-feather centre. The arrangement is part of the product: the two descriptions do not establish which pillow will feel best to your child.
Does the filling make a pillow adjustable?
No. Adjustability comes from the construction. AdaptGo Full has three removable inserts, allowing a parent or carer to compare different setups. A three-chamber pillow, such as Supreme Full, describes how filling is divided inside the shell; it is not the same as a pillow with removable inserts.
Check the selected model’s instructions before changing its setup. A material name alone cannot tell you the right pillow height, and this comparison does not assign a pillow to an age group.
Check the washing instructions before choosing
Care can be a practical deciding factor. Do not assume that every part of a pillow can go into the same wash:
- AdaptGo Full: remove all three inserts before washing the washable outer shell and pillowcase. Its inserts must not be washed, soaked, tumble-dried or dry-cleaned.
- All Silk Mini: the inner pillow must not be machine-washed or dry-cleaned. Remove the silk pillowcase and follow its separate care label.
- Other models: use the instructions for that exact pillow and its separate pillowcase. A cotton shell is not permission to use one wash programme for every filling.
Read the current care label and product instructions before cleaning, and allow every washed part to dry completely before use or storage.
Questions parents ask about pillow fillings
Is there one best filling for every child?
No single material name answers that question. Start with the materials you want, then compare the exact dimensions, construction and care requirements. The table describes the products; it is not a ranking of softness or suitability.
Does feather-free mean latex-free?
No. AdaptGo Full contains no feather or down, but does contain a natural-latex insert. Check each material separately. “Feather-free” also does not establish a hypoallergenic claim.
Is a silk pillowcase the same as a silk-filled pillow?
No. A pillowcase is a removable cover. A silk-filled pillow has silk inside it. All Silk Mini includes both, while a separate silk pillowcase can be used over a pillow with a different filling.
Choose the materials, then check the size
Shortlist the construction that matches what you want, then check the dimensions and a matching pillowcase. Explore the LilPillo children’s pillow collection to compare the available models and sizes.
